I look back on my undergraduate journey not as a necessary rite of adolescence, but as a work reminding me of my trials and journey during this time period. Coursework and academia compose of a minute fraction of my experience in University. I have picked up and participated in an eclectic assortment of co-curriculars. In my first year alone, I was driven to become a teaching assistant, to intern in a tech company, to study abroad, and to volunteer. I hungered to make the most out of my time. There I learned a harsh truth. We have to a advocate for what we want and believe in. We have to justify and defend our positions. Most importantly we need to exhibit confidence in our own skills.

While I learned how to advocate for myself in my personal life, I learned resilience from my academic studies. Studying postwar history and medical microbiology, I've come to appreciate that life comes down to survival. People wait in bread lines for bread that will never be delivered. People sell themselves for money. Bacteria evolve to resist antibiotics. At the heart of living, organisms are simply trying to live. It’s frustrating how chasing after “happiness” has been given so much space in my generation. I’ve learned that we shouldn’t structure our life to work hard to be happy. We should work hard for our commitments. We should work toward our personal goals, to get back up when we fall down. Perhaps after achieving our goals, we may be blessed with that elusive and prized emotion.

Future of L. ZhangI love writing, reading, and editing. From trashy romance novels, narrative history, and microbiology articles, I do them all. I believe in using my skills in research, writing, and the spoken word to advocate for others. My compass currently points to law school. After spending the last few years honing my network, skills, and experience, I am confident in my future goals.
